Photoquai 2007

The first Biennial of World Images in Paris

Content

In 2007, the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac inaugurated "Photoquai, the Biennial of World Images" - a new Parisian festival dedicated to images associated with the non-Western World.

This international festival that reveals rather than consecrates artists is located on the quays of the River Seine and the Debilly footbridge, around the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac and in a dozen other partner institutions. For its first showing, it has brought together contemporary photographers and artists, without ignoring those who belong to the history of World photography that is yet to be written.

‘The world watching the world’ is the overall theme for the first year and it has brought together non-Western photographers, whose points of view are resolutely artistic and far removed from exotic visions and photo-reportage images.

Photoquai is both a popular demonstration accessible to all and a dedicated event for alert amateurs and professionals. It links the monographic exhibitions displayed on the outside walkways along the banks of the Seine to the exhibitions presented inside the institutions. It also organises exceptional encounters in the Théâtre Claude Lévi-Strauss and workshops with partner schools.

The general catalogue is both a high quality illustrated book and a memorial to the demonstration and constitutes the biennial's reference book. It features all the photographs presented along the riverfront as well as in the exhibitions organised by the dozen or so partner institutions.
