Description
Planche XXII [Kachina Papillon]. Légende de la planche : "Plate XXII. Poli Kachina (Butterfly Kachina) like Tasap mana (Plate XXIII) uses the face type mask. The hair falls over the left shoulder. The body is painted in a special design, red, yellow and blue, and the lively dance is performed barefooted. Bells and yarn are worn on both legs. The rattle is sometimes painted and he carries a flower made from colored yarns. On his back is worn an elaborate tablet with eagle feathers at the top and bottom and a fringe of red horse hair at the sides. Poli Kachina and his partner (Plate XIII) always appear together and only in night dances. They, unlike most Kachinas, follow a dance pattern which involves much posturing of the body, and they are not stricly line dancers since they change positions inside the kiva. Most of the steps and dance forms are similar to the unmasked social Butterfly inc".
