"La Réserve des non-dits" (The Unspoken Reserve) is the first project created as part of the sound residencies at the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac. Youmna Saba, winner of the 2022 residency, has delicately captured the breath of the musical instruments in the very heart of the place where they are conserved.
Youmna Saba is a musician, composer and musicologist. She holds a Master's degree in musicology from Antonine University, Baabda, Lebanon. Her dissertation explored the parallels between visual art and music in the context of the traditional Arab arts. Her current research deals with the relationship between electronic and electroacoustic music and the sung Arabic language. This research began with her "Taïma" project, developed as part of several residencies in France.
The artist wanted to allow visitors to access the intimacy of the sounds discovered during her explorations. Sound installations in the visitor areas, at different levels of the tower, will allow visitors to listen to the live resonances taking place in certain instruments, selected for the diversity and quality of their breath.
Listening and sound manipulation points will be set up on the collections level and in the music box for several months after the residency.
