Gili Yalo sings about exile and calls borders into question through a vibrant mix of soul, funk and Ethio-jazz.
Gili Yalo and his family fled Ethiopia to find refuge in Israel during the famine of 1984. It was this journey that marked his texts, sung in English, Hebrew and Amharic.
Picked out at the Transmusicales festival in Rennes in 2017, Gili Yalo blends Ethiopian musical traditions with influences from soul, funk, jazz and psychedelia in an explosive cocktail.
