The Scorpios

Funk - Sudan

Hailing from central Sudan and formed in tribute to singer Saif Abu Bakr, The Scorpios produce a hypnotic sound inherited from 1970s afrofunk.

The members of The Scorpios fled the rise of fundamentalism in their country of origin and found refuge in England in the 80s. They have continued their musical journey between East and West from their country of exile.

The ensemble includes an electric bass, a synthesiser, brass instruments and percussion played to traditional Sudanese rhythms to create an Eastern-style funk. Arab beats and electric guitars blend together wonderfully in a groove midway between Detroit and Khartoum.

The concert is free of charge (subject to availability) as part of the museum’s free admission policy up until 11 October.
