Also termed "mystic minstrels", the Baul favour detachment from worldly possessions and union through music with the divinity that is present in each individual. Parvathy Bâul was initiated from adolescence into Bengali Indian mysticism: the Baul. Now recognised as the greatest Baul signer, Parvathy Baul tells stories, sings, dances and plays the traditional instruments: the ektara, a bamboo idiophone and the duggi, a small double-skinned tambourine. Her voice blends perfectly with the highly distinctive Baul scale, requiring an extensive range and prodigious versatility.
