[SOLD OUT] Setan Jawa

Symphonic cinema for orchestra and gamelan

[SOLD OUT] Indonesian filmmaker and visual artist Garin Nugroho challenges the boundaries of cinema in a show that combines silent film, classical orchestra and Javanese gamelan.

[SOLD OUT]

With the gamelan ensemble Garasi Seni Benawa and the orchestra Le Balcon

Garin Nugroho tells the story set in colonial Indonesia, of a villager Setio, who seals a pact with Setan, a tortured soul whose power allows him to marry the rich Asih. When Asih learns of this pact, she desperately sets out in search of Setan, determined to negotiate her husband’s salvation...
Sublimated by Javanese and Western scores, the images unfold delicately and mystically in a thrilling musical dialogue, performed by twenty-eight musicians.

Recommended for ages 12 and up (some scenes may offend young audiences).
