An original artistic encounter between the Japanese master of Kuruma Ningyō, Koryu Nishikawa V, and the American Tom Lee, who is giving pride of place to the traditional art of puppetry in a contemporary set design.
The Sabre and the Comet, a true visual epic and a journey at the crossroads of West and East.
The main characters—an old astronomer and a former samurai-turned-bandit on the death of her son—feature against a video décor projected to the rhythm of a splendid musical score composed for a Japanese shamisen, a hammered dulcimer and a flute.
The Sabre and the Comet pays tribute to the traditional Japanese technique Kuruma Ningyō in which the puppeteer moves around, in full sight, on a wheeled platform, while controlling their puppet’s arms, legs and head.
Performance created in 2015 under the original title Shank's Mare
