To mark the tenth anniversary of the Law of 21 May 2001, unanimously voted in by the French Parliament concerning the recognition of the slave trade and slavery as a crime against humanity, the international symposium on the theme of "Exposing slavery" provides a forum for debate on this topic.
The slave trade and slavery profoundly transformed the world map. They globalised economies, affected rights, philosophy and arts and brought cultures, languages, knowledge and beliefs into contact. In recent decades, historians have redefined their approach to these centuries of history by reviewing archives and opening up new avenues for research.
Their work has enriched the museography of slavery and that of artists, novelists and filmmakers.
