Jean Cuisenier (1927-2017)

The foundations of an odyssey of anthropology in Europe

This conference not only looks at the institutional activities of Jean Cuisenier, but also his intellectual work which, from Tunisia to Turkey as well as Romania, Bulgaria and, of course, France, encompassed a wide range of questions from kinship, rituals, folk art and relations to history.

About the symposium

At the Musée national des Arts et Traditions Populaires where he was chief curator (1968-1988), and the Centre d’ethnologie française the attached laboratory, of which he was Director (1968-1986) in addition to the journal Ethnologie française, Jean Cuisenier (1927-2017) was one of the anthropologists that helped structure and institutionalise anthropology in France and Europe.

The symposium will take place on Friday 21 June 2019 at the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac and Saturday 22 June 2019 at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
