Art critic, editor, art merchant, and collector of paintings and arts “from distant lands”, as he was fond of calling them, Fénéon exerted a considerable influence over the cultural life of his time.  
An anarchist adept in pointillism, he was a scout and defender of young talents  be these literary (Rimbaud, Apollinaire and Dostoevsky) or artistic  (including Seurat, Bonnard, Matisse, and the Futurists). As a passionate collector of primitive art, he raised the question in 1920 “Will they be admitted into the Louvre?”.
In order to better grasp the initiatives and commitment of a man who is still primarily known today for his “three-line updates”, this symposium in his honour will bring together international cultural history specialists in order to reconsider the place of this individual who silenced debate, in the esteemed words of Alfred Jarry, among avant-gardists.
