Inhabiting the World, Photography Award

Content

The Musée Théodore Monod d'art africain, IFAN Ch. A. Diop and the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac are collaborating today for the exhibition Inhabitating the World, the Photography Award, presenting for the first time works by the three 2019 winners - Prasiit Sthapit (Nepal), Pablo Lopez Luz (Mexico) and Abdoulaye Barry (Chad).

Since 2008, the Photography Award has been demonstrating the museum's commitment to contemporary photography from outside Europe, by inviting photographic artists from one of the four continents represented in the museum's collections - Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania.

In almost 15 years of existence, this support has enabled to reveal many talented photographers, creating a reference collection of international contemporary creation (41 prizewinning photographers, around 700 prints), which questons issues as diverse as ecology, the migratory crisis, post-colonial memory, the deconstruction of the patriarchal model and the role of photography in contemporary identity issues.

Each edition of the Photography Award at Dakar will present the winners, who have one year to complete their creative project, the following year of their selection. For this first edition,  held from January 19 to March 31, 2024, the photographic works of the winners - Prasiit Sthapit (Nepal), Pablo Lopez Luz (Mexico) and Abdoulaye Barry (Chad) - will be exhibited.
