Paintings from afar

The musée du quai Branly — Jacques Chirac collection

Content

This exhibition aims to reveal the diversity and richness of the collection of paintings in the Heritage Unit for Historical and Contemporary Globalisation of the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac.

Going beyond the historiographical angle, this collection can be viewed from a thematic perspective. The common source of inspiration for these pictorial works emanates from the non-European world. Faced with the strange and the unknown, the artists express sensations, emotions and varied points of view. Born of individual initiatives or commissioned, their creations form part of a cultural and political history. They oscillate between onirism and naturalism, fantasy and documentary, romanticism and colonial propaganda.
