Imagier

du musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac

Content

This volume reveals the extent and diversity of the Museum’s permanent collections, while casting light on the influences, on the possible sources of reciprocal inspiration and on the two-way exchanges between Western art and these collections. These images are grouped by associations of forms, aspect, material affinities, motifs and functions, with no regard for geographical zones.

The images of the artefacts are accompanied by a haiku, a proverb, a verse or a short extract from an author, (Western or otherwise). Picasso, Stendhal, a Siberain shaman, Rilke, Paz and Klee have each contributed to the work... From time to time the prose also illustrates a transversal theme that relates to the collections.

The photographs of these artworks sometimes focus on a significant detail, which allows the viewer’s gaze to move from the whole figure to a detail.
The Imagier (Imagery book) offers a profoundly original and poetic meander through our collections.
