This catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition on display from 26 January to 13 November 2016, looks at the mechanisms through which an object attains the status of “person” and can transform into an animate being, even though it is entirely composed of inert material. It seeks to understand the formal characteristics and the situational devices used by the most diverse cultures, including our own, to inject a “person” into objects. It presents essays and works of art – Western or non-Western, popular or contemporary, and brings the reader face to face with objects taken from the field of new technologies, design and robotics.
