Sepik

Arts in Papua New Guinea

Content

Sepik: this little word, that clicks like a crack of a whip in the air, has long haunted our imagination. It is one of those names that evoke far-away lands and mythical places. Here, a valley in the North of New Guinea, a river which flows slowly through a vast equatorial plain, a territory where the ancestors are the creators of the world and the founders of human communities.

They are in the heart of the Sepik art. The objects are markers of identities related to the spirits of past generations and their unforeseeable, disturbing forms blend innovation and power.
