In 2009, the artistic direction of the 2nd Photoquai biennial was entrusted to Anahita Ghabaian Ettehadieh, Director of the Silk Road Gallery of Tehran, the only place specifically dedicated to photography in Iran, that she founded in 2001. She worked in collaboration with some 20 associated curators, who were given the task of identifying young talent in six large geographic zones (South and Latin America, North America, Asia, Caucasus, India, Oceania, Africa). These young photographers do not have a common discourse; they are reunited by the resonance of their works which reflect both their own sensibilities and the social reality of their country. Their work can be found in the corresponding catalogue.

Iranian photography in particular takes centre stage in this second edition. Around thirty years after the Islamic revolution, twenty years after the end of the Iran-Iraq war, photography was affirmed as a major trend in Iran. Represented on the quays of the Seine by the works of photographers Abbas Kowsari, Gohar Dashti, and Katayoun Karami, it is showcased by two complementary exhibitions, in two locations of the Biennial. “165 years of Iranian photography”, in the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, offers an overview since the end of the 19th century with the portraits of the Qajar period and the images of Shah Reza Pahlavi, through to the more contemporary major Iranian photographers, visual artists or documentarians currently working in Iran and abroad. “30 years of Iranian documentary photography”, at the Monnaie de Paris, highlights the work of Iranian photojournalists and documentarians, all wanting to reveal their own identity, their history, their method of understanding the world. Each are concerned with depicting and promoting a better understanding of the upheavals and the drama experienced by their people.
