In Their Native Forests reflects the diversity of the artistic creation of the populations of Gabon and its surrounding regions. It recounts how both an oral and visual vocabulary, stemming from a history forged through multiple connections, has come into existence in the forests of Atlantic Equatorial Africa. Following an itinerary running North to South, the publication demonstrates how the link between the ‘mobility’ of styles of artwork and those of these peoples can be clearly seen through oral traditions as well as the forms of the works themselves.
