Ph.D. thesis award 2025

The Department of Research and Higher Education at the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac aims to encourage and support research in the fields of extra-European arts, techniques, cultures and tangible and intangible heritage, as well as museum institutions and their collections. Relevant disciplines include anthropology, archaeology, ethnomusicology, history, art history, and sociology.


To this end, one Ph.D. thesis award, worth €4,000, is awarded annually to one doctoral dissertation that stands out for its scientific merit and originality.

Eligible doctoral dissertations must be written in French or English and defended between January 1 and December 31, 2024.

The selection will be made by the Scientific Evaluation Committee of the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac.


APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Applications must be endorsed by two recognized scholars.

All documents must be submitted in two PDF files:

File 1: a single PDF document named LASTNAME_application_thesis_prize_MQB.pdf, containing:

  • The completed and signed application form (downloadable here)
  • A summary of the thesis (maximum 10 pages)
  • The official thesis defense report (if not applicable in your country, please state this clearly in the application form and include examiners’ reports)
  • Two letters of recommendation from recognized academic figures (which may include a letter from the thesis advisor or of any other recognized academic figures)
  • A CV including a list of publications
  • An official degree certificate issued by the awarding university

File 2: a separate PDF file named LASTNAME_manuscript_thesis_prize_MQB.pdf, containing the full dissertation manuscript.

The same application file must be submitted TWICE:


A.    Documents 1 and 2 must be sent by email to the following address: prix.these@quaibranly.fr (the files must be smaller than 5 Mo);

B.    Document 1 must be submitted in paper format and Document 2 (the thesis manuscript) must be submitted on a USB stick, both included in the same postal mail addressed to: Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, Département de la recherche et de l’enseignement, 222, rue de l’Université, 75343 Paris Cedex 07.
The application (paper + USB stick) may also be dropped off at the museum’s reception desk during opening hours (222, rue de l’Université, Paris 7th arrondissement).

Application deadline: August 27, 2025 (postmark will be accepted as proof).
